They take off in the cold winter night heading north to a cabin where, Cally says, she just wants a few more days with her baby before she turns her over to the parents, Ruth and Hal, for whom she was a surrogate. It begins with a young woman named Cally bundling up her day-old baby, tossing the child to her ex-boyfriend standing below in the snow, then jumping out the hospital window. Is Toni Halleen’s debut novel, “The Surrogate,” a mystery, a thriller, a family story? It’s all of the above, and it’s a heck of a ride. The simple fact was that he’d made a baby with this woman, not with me, and I was supposed to be happy about it. And I didn’t like the way he’d looked at her it was like she was the mother, not me. ![]() While I was holding her, he’d decided my turn was up, and he’d taken the baby out of my arms and given her to Cally. ![]()
